IASTM can help treat your chronic pain.
Do you have chronic back or neck pain, or have you recently had a sprain or strain? If so, you understand how limiting and painful daily activities can be. Whether you have acute or chronic pain, instrumented-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) provides pain relief and numerous other benefits!
For acute and chronic pain, our physical therapists at Sterling Physical Therapy & Wellness use IASTM. Pain is frequently the result of multiple variables interacting with one another. Fortunately, our team understands the interdependence of our bodies’ systems and how to use any tool necessary to achieve the results you deserve!
Our physical therapists scrape the skin with a special device ( a plastic or metal tool) to increase blood flow to the site of pain and surrounding tissues. You will also notice a decrease in inflammation and an improvement in the condition that is causing you pain.
In the case of back and neck pain, for example, it is very common for people to also feel tension and restrictions in the soft tissues surrounding the spinal joints. IASTM in these areas will help you feel less pain, be more mobile, and overall feel better!

What is IASTM?
IASTM is a cutting-edge technique that allows our physical therapists at Sterling Physical Therapy & Wellness to effectively treat scar tissue, fascial restrictions, and range of motion restrictions that cause pain.
The technique employs specially designed stainless steel and/or plastic instruments to detect and treat areas with soft tissue restrictions, tension, or chronic inflammation.
Typically, a specialized lotion or cream is applied to the skin in the area to be treated. This allows the instrument’s edges to scrape along the skin and facilitates muscle stretch and relaxation. To aid in the natural healing process, IASTM works to break down adhesions and stimulate blood flow to the injured area.
IASTM requires the practitioner to have training and expertise in this technique. Depending on your requirements, different speeds and pressures will be used. This highly effective treatment is not painful and should not cause bruising when administered by a skilled practitioner.
